Investigating the impacts of holding sport events on host community Case study: University of Birjand as the host of 11th sport –cultural Olympiad of University girl students in Iran

Abstract

The purpose of the research was to investigate the impacts of holding sport events on host community. The method of this research was descriptive –correlation and the statistical populations consist of all organizers (consisted of students and staff) of 11th Sport- Cultural Olympiad of University girl students in Iran. One hundred eighty six subjects were selected as statistical sample by stratified random sampling. A researcher-made questionnaire was used to collect data. The content and face validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by expert university panel. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used to test the reliability of the questionnaire coefficient (α=0.94). Factor analysis, with a varimax rotation was used to analyze the data. Fifty three variables were selected and classified into six categories: infrastructure development and management, economic, social capital, development and promotion, empathy and camaraderie and cultural development.  A five -point Likert scale was used to determine the significance of the variables. The results showed that the most important factors were infrastructure development and management factor (4.17 ± 0.43, mean ± SD) and economic development factor (3.88 ± 0.50, mean ± SD) was the least important factor. The results also showed that sport events holding managers can solve many of problems such as defects regarding to infrastructure and management section of their region by accepting the hosting of the athletic competitions.
